The brief for this project was to design something that visually represents the passage of time.
This design of a colour changing water clock works by having a mixture of an alkaline liquid and universal indicator in the bottom half of the sand-timer shaped water clock, and an alkali liquid slowly drip-feeding from the top half, into the bottom half to mix with the alakali liquid and universal indicator. As the bottom half of the clock turns from being a mostly alkaline solution into one that's more acidic, this changes the colour of the universal indicator over time. To measure how much time has passed since the clock's activation, the user would simply compare the colour of the liquid in the bottom to a colour-coded key.
